CLIMATE AND SOIL

The pineapple plant is typical of areas with a tropical climate. It occurs at elevations between sea level and 900 meters above sea level. It requires temperatures between 23 and 30ºC; Lower or higher temperatures markedly reduce leaf growth and fruit formation, ripening, and quality.

GROWING AREAS

In Costa Rica it is produced mainly in Buenos Aires de Puntarenas, in the canton of San Carlos, Sarapiquí, Grecia, Siquirres, Guápiles, Pérez Zeledón, Esparza and Orotina. Planting can begin in May, at the beginning of the rain, in areas with low rainfall. In San Carlos and Sarapiquí, although it can be cultivated throughout the year, it is preferable to sow in August, to avoid to a great extent the setbacks of the "natural flowering" that occurs in November and December. When irrigation is available, it can be sown at any time of the year.

VARIETIES

Smooth Cayenne: The leaves are dark green and broad (6 cm) and have no spines on the edge, except at the ends. The ripe fruit is reddish-orange in color, large, and the eyes are shallow. Monte Lirio: known in Costa Rica as "criolla" and is cultivated only in Central America.
